Math Olympiad Tryouts will be held the week of September 29th. they are open to any 4th or 5th grader who is interested in being on the team. Students must have parent permission to try out for the team. Please go to the Student Resources page for more information and the permission form. Practices for those who make the team will be held on Thursday afternoons from 3:45-4:30. If you already know your child has other commitments on Thursday afternoons, he or she should probably not try out for the team. Students who were on the team last year are invited to join the team again. However, you must be able to attend the Thursday practice sessions.
I am so happy to let you know that our 4th and 5th grade resource classes are underway! Please visit their pages for information about what we are doing. I am so proud of the students! They are focussed and willing to work. some students still need their supplies and some parents need to complete the parent information form.
Parents please plan to attend the AIG Parent Meeting for your child's grade level on September 24th.
Finally, the AIG Nomination Window is open through September 25th. Please click on the FAQ button to find out more about that. Please note the new times for my AIG Parent Information Meeting on September 24th
Yes, the fourth grade parent meeting will be longer since this is their first year in AIG. Fifth grade will be shorter because there will not be as much new information. I will still hold a morning meeting from 8-8:30 AM on 9/26/2014 for both 4th and 5th parents who were unable to attend the evening meeting. I am so excited to get to know my 4th graders, to see my 5th graders, and meet our new Mills Park Panthers coming from other schools! Classes will start this week, and I can't wait. We will start with the introduction/review of class procedures and then we will get right in to our units.
All of the AIG resource class units are designed to align with the standards their classroom teachers are addressing. For example my 5th grade math group will start with learning about the stock market. They are studying numbers and operation in math class and economics in social studies. So, learning about the stock market extends and aligns with current standards. It is my goal to always offer a real world, rigorous unit to push thinking, collaboration and creativity. If you're wondering about creativity in the stock market...wait and see what the kids do! Check back soon to see what all the other classes will be doing! |
